Toyota plans big production cut in China
TOKYO--Toyota Motor Corp. plans to drastically slash production in China this month, possibly by around 50% from the initially planned level, Japanese media reported Friday.
Toyota's new car sales in China in September appear to have been less than 50% of the initial target due to anti-Japan protests there, the Nikkei reported.
The auto maker will determine the production volume for October depending on sales and inventory, the Nikkei said. It added that the firm plans to stop exports of the Lexus line of luxury cars and other models from Japan until November.
Toyota's factories in China have been shut for the country's National Day holiday period. They will reopen Monday. But inventories are building up due to slow sales, and there is no prospect for a recovery in new car sales. |
